Press Release
From Dec 6 to Jan 18, Don Gallery proudly presents the first solo exhibition of Huang Ling in Shanghai. A year ago on the founding day of Don Gallery, the young teacher from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute had his Shanghai debut during the dual exhibition “Launch”.
From Huang Ling’s works, a series of sentimental attachments beyond any specific adjective can be detected. They could be romantic, poetic, nostalgic or mystic.
Huang’s paintings can be divided into two categories, narrative and psychological. As we can see in his works such as “Metamorphosis”, “Camouflage”, “A Great Night”, the artist uses narrative scenarios to emphasize his emotional experience, which is closely related to a youth’s love experience.
Apart from the sentimental attachment, Huang also embodies a visual metaphor into his work, his usage of light source. In most of his works, Huang Ling deliberately emphasizes the use of light in order to strengthen emotional features, or to build-up a sense of distance between the paintings and the viewers. In that way, he provides the viewers a third-person point of view to observe his sentimental affections, which could either be a memory of youth, a farewell to the past or a gentle sadness like which is hidden in “the scattered glitter”. As the saying goes, an artwork should be personal in the first place rather than public. Huang Ling is just such an artist that carefully guards his own sentiments.
