The “The Populace” exhibition we are presenting is a selection of more than 70 photos from Chen Jin’s masterpiece “The Populace” collection which took him a decade to complete. The photos is a comprehensive display of all aspects of Sichuan urban live, including people’s spiritual beliefs, living condition, local teashops, opera groups, etc.

Chen Jin shows a specific concern about the contemporary Chinese society with his collection “The Populace”. From his perspective, the beautiful scenery and the ideal way of living, which have been borne in his pleasant memories, is now diminishing during the modern urbanization. While he could do nothing to prevent the inevitable, he chooses to use his vintage photos to preserve the good old memories, to express his sadness towards the lost of unsophisticated human relations, and to show his concern towards the future of China’s urbanization.
